We flew from New York directly to Johannesburg on South African Airways. That is a looooooong flight. Like--15 or 16 hours long. Fortunately, South African Air has learned that people need to be occupied during such long boring flights, and they've really stocked up their entertainment system with a lot of good movies.
I'm not sure that I can recall exactly all five titles of the movies I watched. I know that I watched Grand Budapest Hotel, because it was the first I watched, as soon as we took off, and it was on my "eager to see it" list. And then I watched two other films after that, and two more on the way back.
Here's the thing, though... South African Airways edits the movies for adult content. Meaning, all the swear words are either cut (leaving weird silences in the middle of sentences), or replaced with hokey dialogue. I don't think that Justin Timberlake, in a fit of anger during Runner Runner (another movie I watched) would have screamed "FUDGE!" But on a South African Air flight, that's what he did indeed say.
For another film, Martha Marcy Mae Marlene, I think there were probably entire scenes that were deleted. Either that, or the movie just doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense at times.
So, the good news is that you've got great entertainment options on South African Air. The bad news is, you're not actually going to see the real movie.
