My birthday is today, and David surprised me by taking me to one of the restaurants on my "need to eat there" list. Only thing was...he didn't realize that it was on my list, because I hadn't updated it on this site.
Well, it's updated now.
Everything was really terrific. We ordered the four course tasting menu, which sounded relatively modest, but...hoo, boy! Four courses, but with three dishes in each course. So, that's really like a twelve course meal.
They started us off with charcuterie, a radicchio salad and fried artichokes. I'm not normally a fan of mortadella, but of the three they gave us, it was actually my favorite. The salad was really good. I joked that there was a Harry Potter spell called "radicchio" and if you cast it correctly, Belgian endive appears out of nowhere. The artichokes were delicious, too.
The next course were the pastas. We got ravioli filled with pate de campagna, tagliatelle with short rib, and my favorite, spaghetti, in a simple sauce of butter, olive oil, parmesan and anchovy. It was rich and creamy without being too salty. Really delicious. Really, really delicious.
We had lamb shank over beets and butter beans for our third course. It was probably the perfect dish for a cold winter night. We had broccoli raab and carrots as the other two dishes for that course. I have to tell you that I don't think I've ever, ever, ever had carrots that were so delicious. They were perfectly roasted, sweet and soft. Just stunning. If I could make carrots like that at home, I'd probably turn orange from eating them so often.
And then, finally, we got the desserts. Tartufo, an olive oil cake, and a panna cotta. The panna cotta was rich, without being overly sweet. The olive oil cake was terrific, too. David announced that he wanted to learn to make olive oil cake. Note to David: today is my birthday--I wouldn't complain if we had olive oil cake with a candle in it. And then the tartufo, a delicious dark chocolate ice cream coated in chocolate shavings. It was the sweetest of the three, and really, really good.
So, that's my second restaurant from my "need to eat there" list. More to come!
