I started the year off right--by knocking the very first item off of my list!
In fairness, though, I put this item on the list specifically because I wanted to complete one of the 101 Things right out of the gate. But, just because this one was low-hanging fruit, doesn't mean it wasn't a struggle for me.
It has been years since I've managed to stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve. Last year, David and I were in Seattle, and the time change didn't help. By the time midnight arrived, Pacific Time, we were sound asleep in our hotel.
The year before that, my mom was in the hospital, so my New Year's Eve plans got scuttled. I was exhausted and in bed, well before midnight.
This year, however, we made a reservation for the late seating at The Farm on Adderley and arrived just a little before 10 p.m. for dinner. We're regulars at The Farm--we got married there--so we knew that the food was terrific.
Black Bass Tartar, with white balsamic, pickled apples and watercress
Great Northern Bean Soup, with clams and chorizo
Pan-seared Diver Scallops, with jerusalem artichoke confit and pistachio
Smoked Duck Breast, with mustard greens and date purée
Tres Leches Cake (though I also sampled the Blood Orange Trifle and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse)
And, of course, plenty of Business Juice (what you mortals call "bourbon"), and champagne at midnight. Everything was completely delicious.
But most importantly, I managed to remain awake until midnight, so that I could usher in 2014 with my wonderful spouse, and a few good friends.
Item number one--off the list!
